Las Posadas, which commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, is reenacted every evening from December 16th until Christmas Eve. In the 1940s, when Politi wrote and illustrated this picture book, the observance of Las Posadas on Olvera was a festive affair within the downtown Mexican community. Each night participants in the procession sing this traditional song. There is an account of how Politi came to write his most famous book in Horn Book Magazine.
