11. Mieko. Japanese-Americans have traveled downtown to Little Tokyo to celebrate their ancestral heritage at Nisei Week Japanese Festival since 1934 (it was suspended in 1942 when the United States Army was empowered to evacuate West Coast Japanese nationals and citizens of Japanese descent to internment camps). The event, which is the largest of its kind in the country, is planned, organized, and operated by volunteers in the community. This illustration shows Little Tokyo's streets decorated for the upcoming event.
