13. Ernst Schur.
Das lustige Jahr.
Ilse Schur, illustrator.
Stuttgart: Loewes Verlag Ferdinand Carl, [1914].
A brother and sister are selecting
a rackwork or mechanical slide with its wooden frame
to show. The slide projected on the wall is similar
to the one in the lower right-hand corner of number 9.
The Schnurs were a husband-and-wife team who collaborated on many books
for children. Schnur wrote the text, and Ilse, who was a teacher at
the Zeichenschule des Vereins für Kunstlerinnen in Berlin, drew
the pictures. Details in the illustration above, such as the grandfather
shushing the restless little ones peeking out from under the screen,
suggest why the Schnurs were thought to excel at the depiction of contemporary
German middle-class life.
