16. Squire Fox Went Out in a Hungry
Plight.
Edinburgh, London: George Waterson & Sons, [ca. 1880].
The Diana R. Tillson copy.
This spirited interpretation of the well-known song, "The Fox
Went Out on a Chilly Night," also casts the fox in the role of
a sexual predator who happens to fancy eating his victims. Wrapped
up in a greatcoat like a highwayman, Squire Fox drags two innocents
in their nightgowns out of their beds to their doom. Potter's foxy
gentleman, however, has a certain gentility that the squire lacks,
even though his intentions are equally dishonorable.
