This picture book is a verse retelling of the well-known brothers Grimm story, The Wolf and Seven Kids, by the younger brother of A. E. Housman. It was published nine years before Potter’s Jemima Puddleduck. In this version, Laurence Housman (1865-1959), substituted a family of geese for the goats.
Although Housman was a fine artist in his own right, now best known
for his illustrations for Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market," Mabel
Dearmer (1872-1915), the poster artist and social activist, provided
the pictures. The mother goose has just gone out, having delivered
to her little flock a long warning not to open the door to anyone.
Notice how smartly turned out she is with her beak in the air, waddling
down the street in pattens that lift her above the mud.
