The Drawing School was dedicated to Prince Edward, the fourth son of King George III, the future Duke of Kent, and father of Queen Victoria. Although the section on drawing was aimed at both boys and girls, the section on kitemaking was strictly for boys. The book's readers learned as much about the art of decorating a kite as the craft of assembling one. But the author Richard Johnson assured them if the instructions were followed to the letter, the result would be a kite that would fly well and make a brave display from the air. The text includes not only diagrams for the bow kite, the classic English shape, but also many more elaborate ones such as the Turk's head, both shown here.
