The kite occupies a prominent place in this frontispiece by Edmund Evans, the wood engraver who worked closely with the illustrators Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, and Beatrix Potter. The frontispiece represents a rational toy shop, stocked only with educational toys. The spinning doll, peashooter, kaleidoscope, zoetrope, hoop, squirt, pump, bowl, top, arrow, and ball are each the subject of a chapter showing how its operation demonstrates scientific principles. Erle the author believed that this was more interesting than describing toys' manufacture. He also promoted that his book was an ideal way to pass the time constructively in the country on long, cold winter evenings. The Cotsen copy was presented to a young reader by the author.
