2a.  The Child's-New-Year's Gift, or, A Chaste & Significant Collection of Riddles upon the Most Familiar Subjects. London: J. Hodges, ca. 1750.

In the mid-eighteenth century, it was prohibitively expensive to have full-color illustrations in children's books. The publisher of this little riddle collection got around this problem by having alternative openings printed in black and one color. The text of the riddles was in black and the illustrated answers in red. This would have gotten good marks for production values in its day.
