Non-Keyword

Jump to: searching tips / sample searches

The Non-Keyword tab provides for the searching of left-anchored phrase indexes (including headings) and call numbers only. For most purposes we will need to use only two elements of the form: Search by, and Search for.

  • Search by. Select a Search Index from the pull-down list box. Locating a particular Search Index can be facilitated by typing the first letter of the Index name, such as T for Title.
  • Search for. In the Search for box, type the data to be searched. Truncation is automatic, as set in the Preferences.

Other options, such as filters and limits, will rarely be used and will rarely be useful.

Results are displayed in a Headings List or a Titles Index (actually a list) depending on the search type. The five listed below are Headings searches, the ones that include authority records. Results appear in a Headings List, which shows only headings, with authority records being identified by "Authorized" or "Reference" in the left column. Bibliographic records can be accessed by selecting the heading(s) desired, which retrieves a Titles Index list. Authority records may be accessed by selecting the heading(s) desired and clicking on the Authority button. Click OK until the authority record appears. All other searches are bibliographic left-anchored searches that do not include authority records. Results appear in a Titles Index list of bibliographic records.

Headings searches—Include authority records, result in Headings List

  • Author headings
  • Title headings
  • Subject headings
  • Name/Title headings
  • Subject subdivisions

Searching Tips

  • If the radio button for either Find or Browse is available, generally select Find. (Browse is only available for Headings and Call number searches and will be grayed out when not applicable.) Find results in a bounded list of entries, while Browse allows users to scroll through the entire list of entries. The number of records retried by a Find search appears in the lower left corner of the results window. Find searches can return a "no matches" result.
  • Enter search terms in the order that they appear in the record, beginning with the first word. Omit initial articles that are not considered in filing.
  • Use upper or lower case—results are the same.
  • Omit diacritics and punctuation from search terms and close up any space that would have been occupied by the diacritic or punctuation.
  • Include hyphens when searching for ISSN and RLIN ID. Hyphens are optional in other searches such as Subject headings or Identifiers.
  • Include spaces when searching the Identifiers index
  • In the Search for box provide as much or as little of a term as you wish but try to make the search distinctive enough to retrieve a useful result. For instance, if you are looking for the title "History of Tom Jones" don’t just type "history of"—the result set will be larger than necessary or convenient.
  • Include or omit double hyphens before subdivisions in subject heading searches—results are the same.
