Arabic NACO Funnel

All variant access points are optional under RDA. The Arabic NACO Funnel strongly encourages members to make the following references. Additional variants can be made following RDA guidelines and cataloger's judgment.

Script version

Make a reference in Arabic script using the same elements which appear in the authorized access point. [use MELA guidelines, etc.]

Variant romanizations

When a name may be romanized in more than one way make references from romanizations not chosen for the heading (within reason). The NAF may be consulted to determine the "normal" romanization of a name.

Non-standard romanizations

When an item being cataloged has a non-standard romanization, make a reference from this form. When the person is classical, choose the entry element for the reference to correspond with the entry element in the heading (if possible). Do not make direct order or other variant references from non-standard romanization.

Unused surnames

References may be made from surname elements that have not been chosen for the main entry.

For classical names, an unused surname will replace the entry element in the heading with additional elements remaining the same.

For modern names, the additional elements will depend on usage. Note that the order of names cannot be changed from the way they appear in the source where they are found.

Direct order (classical only)

A reference is made beginning with the ism and containing all elements (and only those elements) found in the heading. Do not include elements which do not appear in the heading even if they are found in the piece in hand (i.e., do not necessarily refer from the form found in the chief source even though this is cited in full in a 670).

From patronymic in ism-patronymic headings (classical only)

When the heading is in the form of ism patronymic in direct order, an inverted reference from patronymic, ism should be made.
