Historic Maps

Princeton 's Program in Hellenic Studies and Historic Maps Collection have collaborated in acquiring, cataloging, and digitizing significant cartographic items relating to Greece and the broader Hellenic world: Turkey, Crete, and the Eastern Mediterranean. All catalogued maps are described in the Library's online catalog; their digitized surrogates can be viewed in high resolution from links in those catalog records. One can find them by searching via keyword methods (cartographer name, title word, date, place name), but the most convenient is by browsing the results of a subject form search beginning with the word maps. On the catalog's search page (http://catalog.princeton.edu), in the "search for" box enter a phrase like

maps--greece
or
maps--greece--athens

and in the "search by" box, select "subject heading". The results will a listing of maps by date--so one can see the range of the historic maps that the Library holds for a specific geographic region. Clicking on any maps phrase will call up the catalog record for the map, with a link ("see the map") to the high resolution viewer.
