S. T. (Sarah Treverbian) Prideaux
British, 1853-1933
Sarah Prideaux was a bookbinder, teacher, writer, and collector
of fine bindings. In addition to An Historical Sketch of Bookbinding and
other books on her craft, she wrote a well-regarded history of aquatint
engraving, which includes a bibliography and notes on artists such
as Thomas Rowlandson. Prideaux used gilt-stamped brown morocco for
this edition of two of Perrault’s Mother Goose Tales. Her cover
design depicts a flowering rose bush tooled in gold; the spine is
titled and decorated with a thorned stem. Signed “S.T.P. 1900” on
the rear turn-in.
